Thanks to the unique artistry of Val Webb, a unique art fundraiser for the Alabama Coastal Foundation is under way. Artists from around the world were invited to create art on vintage postcards, celebrating the Gulf of Mexico. All art is priced at $50 and will be available to purchase on-line beginning at 10:30 am CST on Friday Nov. 5. A public showing and sale will be hosted by ACF on Nov. 12 at Room 1927, next to the Saenger Theatre, downtown Mobile.

A new restaurant, named Agave, will be opening soon in Fairhope.

I was honored with being asked to paint a few large canvas' (36" x 48").

"Agave", to the left, was painted as a tribute to the restaurant. And "El Toro", to the right, was a tribute to the homeland of my husband, Eric's, father.

I am finishing up my last painting right now...but here are 2 already completed works.

Early last summer, my husband, Eric & I began recording a Celtic CD, with some traditional pieces and 5 original pieces written by Eric. Eric plays the classical guitar & Irish whistles, while I play the Celtic harp and chime tree. I designed the artwork, including making the stained glass Celtic cross found on the cover. at least 10 times into the kiln...

and then having to wait patiently for the kiln to cool enough just to see if my latest layer turned as I invisioned...

My 7 layer hand-crafted glass book, with 22 K gold embellishment was complete in time for submission to "The Art of Reading" at the Mobile Public Library.

This story does have a happy ending for me...because my glass book was selected to be a part of this show!!!

I've begun a new series of glass fusion dishes.

They are desert size dishes. This first dish I created in honor of my husband's Venezuelan heritage. The yellow band stands for the wealth of the land, the blue for courage, and the red for the independence from Spain. This is Mexico. The Mexican Flag was voted the most beautiful flag in the world on 7/7/08. It is a red, white and green banner; red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the battles for Independence, white symbolizes purity and green symbolizes the fertility of the earth. The center contains an eagle eating a rattlesnake while standing with its left claw upon a cactus, and a half circle of green oak (enciño) on the left (symbolizing strength) and laurel branches on the right (symbolizing victory). The eagle eating a snake while perched upon a cactus is from an ancient Aztec legend.

The image on the left represents the flag of United Kingdom. The UK flag is actually three flags in one.
It is made up from the:
England flag,
Scotland flag and
the patron saint of Ireland's Flag.
The emblems (flags) that appear on the Union Flag are the crosses of three patron saints:
Scotland is represented by the flag of St. Andrew.
England is represented by the flag of St. George. Northern Ireland is represented by the flag of St. Patrick.
The image to the right represents the flag of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland's flag is made of orange, white, and green. The flag is twice as wide as it is tall. The green color on the flag represents the native people of Ireland (most of whom are Roman Catholic). The orange color represents the British supporters of William of Orange who settled in Northern Ireland in the 17th century (most of whom are Protestant). The white in the center of the flag represents peace between these two groups of people.

The national flag of Italy is a tricolor flag which featuring vertical stripes of green, white and red color. The green color of the flag stands for the plains and the hills of Italy, white stands for the snowy Alps, and red for the blood spilt in the Italian Independence wars. There is also a religious interpretation of these colors; green represents hope, white represents faith and red represents charity.

An Introduction

Hello and Welcome to Karin's Stained Glass Blog. I'm Karin's biggest fan and daughter, Laura. My mother began studying art in high school in her homestate Indiana. She currently resides on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay in Alabama. Karin learned to work with stained glass 9 years ago; her first project was a large stained glass window of a dog wood flower (her favorite tree). She's done a number of windows and hundreds of ornaments and smaller pieces. Wanting to expand and grow in her art, she got a kiln and has been creating fused glass pieces. In addition to her glass work Karin is a commissioned portrait and architectual artist. Karin is an elementary art teacher in Mobile, AL and has taught summer children's art classes at the Easter Shore Arts Center in Fairhope, AL.
